Champions League Final 2016 – Madrid Showdown

Spanish clubs have once again dominated European competitions with the six sides in La Liga making up the semi-finals for both Europa and Champions League. With Sevilla turning round a deficit on Liverpool last week to lift the Europa trophy we’re going to see yet again another year where both European Cups return to Spain.

This will be the second time in three years that the Champions League final will be a local Madrid derby. In 2014 Real Madrid were held by Atletico into extra time, only for Real to step up a gear and put on a mesmerizing display to end the game 4:1.

Atletico’s loss to Levante two weeks ago may have cost them second in La Liga but such has been the relentless pace of the top three clubs Diego Simeone can’t be too disappointed to have fallen at the last hurdle given the talent and expense the other two cubs have at their disposal and will build on this for next year.

Tough call for the final

Both games in La Liga have been extremely tight with neither side wanting to give anything away. In the first fixture Benzema poached an early goal and it looked like Real Madrid would dominate, Atletico got back into the game in the second half and Vietto scored a crutial equalizer for the home side in the dying minutes of the game.

At the Bernabeu it was another tight game with only Atlético’s Griezmann goal in the 52nd minute to separate the two sides.

Is Torres back to his best?

Since Fernando Torres’ departure from Chelsea the Spanish forward returned to Atletico Madrid where he made a name for himself and has gradually been getting back to the same level of performance we saw from him at Liverpool, scoring 11 goals this season.

Diego Simeone confirms his side is “100 percent fit” to face the decimal-giants of Real Madrid who have won this competition a staggering 10-times since its creation.

Zidane makes his mark

Real Madrid’s recent form in the league has been sensational with 10/10 wins in La Liga the giants of the Champions League having won this 10-times appear to be peaking just at the right time. Ronaldo tops the score card with the most number of goals in the history of the competition and with the Portuguese player netting an impressive 35 goals in the league you’d be a big man to bet against him adding to that tally.

Neither side are the underdog going into this game and given the results mentioned previously in the league this could go all the way to pens. So we believe your best bet would be Under 2.5 goals and Real Madrid to win, or both teams to score and a draw a full-time with Real to win in extra.
