Williams reveal F1 2015 “contender”

Williams F1 Team have released pictures of their 2015 car which they hope to narrow the gap between them and front-runners of Red Bull and Mercedes. Williams will hope to continue the progress they made last year were they ended the season in a respectful third in the championship, which resulted from successful races such as second place finishes in Abu Dhabi, Germany and Britain.

The FW37 will use the Mercedes turbo hybrid engine which dominated the field last year and with comments coming from Renault this week suggesting they are still playing catch up to Mercedes, it puts Williams in a good position.

Chief technical officer Pat Symonds explained the differences between FW37 and last years car, in particular was the need to find extra performance from sections of the car that had originally needed to be light, he said: “We felt we came up against design barriers in the FW36 and so took the opportunity to remove these barriers for the benefit of performance. The FW36 carried a reasonable amount of ballast, so we were able to make alterations to the design for added performance without the fear of adding excessive mass.”

The team have kept with the same drivers line-up as last year with Finnish star Valtteri Bottas and Brazilian veteran Felipe Massa. The team have also signed young 21-year-old Brit Alex Lynn to be their development driver for 2015 along side Susie Wolff who tested with them throughout last year. Alex won the GP3 feeder series in 2014.

Williams won’t have long to wait to see if all of the design and development time during the winter has paid off as pre-season testing begins this weekend on Sunday 1st February in Jerez.

Force India F1 unveils it’s new 2015 car

The Force India F1 team launched a new team livery on their previous years car to pundits in New Mexico. The new 2015 car (VJM08) will not run during the first week of pre-season testing which starts in Jerez on 1st February, instead they will run a modified 2014 car, we’ll have to wait until the second pre-season testing in Barcelona which runs from 19th-22nd February before we can see the new aerodynamics package of the 2015 car.

Following the unveiling, Technical Director Andrew Green highlighted some of the changes that will come to the new 2015 car, most noticeably will be the front-end

“It is a redesign that involved a lot of work over the winter, as the new regulations caused a loss in terms of downforce and we’ve been working to claw back all that performance.”

In addition to the new aerodynamics, the VJM08 will be powered by a Mercedes engine (the same engine manufacturer that took Lewis Hamilton to win the 2014 championship), so with improvements to both engine and chassis Force India’s boss Vijay Mallya was quite confident and looking forward to the season ahead, Mallya said: “We have two exceptional drivers who will hopefully steer the challenger to the front of the grid and a few podiums during the year.”

The team do in fact have two great young talented drivers in the Mexican Sergio Perez and German Nico Hulkenberg, both of which have proven in previous seasons their ability behind the wheel and have beaten off still competition to retain their drives for this year. But last season proved difficult to keep up with the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull and the team only achieved one podium place. Hopefully with a competitive engine and revised aero they can compete with the top teams.

Last year was difficult for the Lotus Team which saw them end the season in eighth place, their last win was way back in 2012 when Kimi Räikkönen took an emphatic win at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and its something that chief executive officer Matthew Carter hopes the team can get back to winning ways, during a recent interview he said:

“It is time to put the disappointment of last season behind us and benefit from 12 months of hard work; we are ready to return to our rightful place at the pinnacle of the sport.”

In addition to the new aero package Lotus have also switched engines from their traditional Renault to the new Mercedes engine which helped Lewis Hamilton clinch the world championship last year. Lotus will keep the same line-up as last year, hoping the experience of both Frenchman Romain Grosjean and Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado can achieve more podium places this year.

Technical director Nick Chester also pointed out the areas of improvements the design team have made from last years car, he said: “It’s no secret that we struggled with last year’s car so we’ve targeted every area that caused us an issue.

“We’ve made strong progress in the wind tunnel as well as in areas such as packaging and cooling. We expect the E23 to perform far, far better than its predecessor.

We don’t have long to see how the car compares to the rest of the paddock as first pre-season test starts in Jerez on 1st to 4th February.
